Area Restriction Order announced around Tremont Creek wildfire

KAMLOOPS – Concern over the the Tremont Creek wildfire southwest of Kamloops, has led the BC Wildfire Service to invoke an Area Restriction Order.

The order encompasses a large area of land, stretching from the southwest tip of Kamloops Lake nearly all the way to Cache Creek and then south to Lytton.

Under the order no one can remain in or enter the restricted area without the prior written authorization.

The Wildfire Act Section 11(2) designates the only exceptions to allowed:

(a) Travelling as a person acting in an official capacity.

(b) Travelling for the purpose of supporting wildfire suppression activities.

(c) Travelling as a person working for Highland Valley Copper Mine to and from the mine site for the purposes of maintaining critical infrastructure at the site.

(d) Travelling to or from his or her principle residence, that is not under an evacuation order.

(e) Travelling to or from private or leased property for the purposes of accessing a secondary residence or recreational property, that is not under an evacuation order.

(f) Engaging and/or participating in agricultural activities pertaining to livestock or agriculture management on private or leased property.

(g) Using a highway as defined in the Highway Act (e.g. use of travelling along Hwy 97C).

The Area Restriction Order went into effect at noon Sunday (July 18) and will remain in effect until October 15, 2021 unless it is rescinded earlier.

The Tremont Creek wildfire was first spotted July 12 and has grown to an estimated 4,000 hectares. It has led to several Evacuation Alerts and Evacuation Orders for the Walhachin area and the Oregon Jack Creek Indian Band.

The BC Wildfire Service says fireguards on the western edge of the blaze have prevented it from leaping across Highway 97. However strong winds have challenged firefighting efforts on the western edge of the fire.
