PARKSVILLE — Businesses in the southern tip of Parksville were without power for several hours Wednesday afternoon, following a BC Hydro line being downed.

Power was cut around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14, as a result of a motor vehicle accident when a crane truck contacted hydro lines.

“(I) was just in the office when we heard the crash and power went out,” Darcy Hope told NanaimoNewsNOW. “Went out to investigate and saw the crane truck had pulled them over.”

A second truck was also involved in the incident with wires draping both trucks.

Mike Tisdelle, assistant fire chief with Parksville Fire Department, said BC Hydro crews arrived on scene approximately 45 minutes after the incident.

Both drivers of the trucks remained in their vehicles, conscious and alert.

“Both drivers did a great job and stayed inside their vehicles till BC Hydro isolated the power lines. Many bystanders also did a great job of staying away from the downed power lines.”

Around 170 customers in the Parksville Industrial Park had their power severed as a result of the incident.

Power remained out through the afternoon and evening on Wednesday and was expected to be restored early Thursday, July 15.

Emergency Management Oceanside warned roads around the accident were closed with motorists advised to exit Parksville via Hwy. 4.

Four hydro poles were on the ground as a result of the accident, including one leaning on a semi-trailer.
