Support for evacuees in Merritt extended to 30 days

Jul 13, 2021 | 11:01 AM

MERRITT, B.C. — Any evacuees currently finding shelter in Merritt are now able to receive support for up to 30 days. When the EOC in Merritt first opened on June 30th, evacuees from Lytton were being given 72 hours of support, that number was quickly jumped to seven days later that night.

“At the moment we are processing the renewals of those who have come through town and are still staying here. They’re still getting accommodation, food vouchers, etc,” said Merritt EOC Communications Manager Greg Lowis. “We’re taking this one day at a time. We’re not getting many new evacuees at this point.”

The City is still not expecting donations at this time for the evacuees. Those looking to donate are advised to look towards the Canadian Red Cross or Untied Way for monetary donations.

The Nicola Valley Food Bank is accepting all donations at this time.
