More lightning means more fires

KAMLOOPS — More lightning last night is sure to spark more fires in the area.

Right now, there are 210 fires burning in the province, most of those in the Interior. 78 fires are currently burning in the Kamloops Fire Centre, while there are 65 in the Cariboo Fire Centre.

Highway 97C was the scene of a number of vehicle incidents around the Pennask Lake Summit because of severe weather. Heavy rain and lightning made it difficult to drive.

Most of the fires nearby didn’t grow much overnight, but a couple of the more dangerous ones, including the one at Sparks Lake, are still out of control. Kamloops Fire and Rescue dealt with a small grass fire late last night up the Long Lake Road. It happened about 11:00 PM. Platoon Captain Ken Hartt says the fire, the result of lightning, was about 100 and 50 meters, and was put out quickly when crews arrived on scene.
