Severe thunderstorm watch for South Thompson area

KAMLOOPS — People in the South Thompson area should be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and take necessary safety precautions.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch Monday (July 5) and 10:55 a.m., saying that conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms throughout the day and early this evening.

Other threats include very strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain.

Affected regions include:

  • Thompson – Nicola
  • Shuswap
  • North Okanagan (including Vernon)
  • Arrow Lakes
  • Slocan Lake
  • Northern Kootenay Lake
  • East Kootenay – North (including Invermere)

Hot and dry conditions may lead to dry lightning for some areas. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees, and blow large vehicles off the road.

Environment Canada encourages residents to go indoors when thunder roars.
