New EV chargers coming to Snaw-Naw-As market

LANTZVILLE — Four new electric vehicle charging stations will help people in Nanoose Bay and travellers along the Island Highway.

The Nanoose Economic Development Corporation is receiving a $210,000 grant from the Province’s CleanBC Go Electric Public Charger program for the project.

The EV stations will be installed at the Snaw-Naw-As Market along the Island Highway, a project Chief Gordon Edwards welcomes.

“(We’re) proud to support the use of clean energy and participate in meeting the CleanBC goals, which are aligned with our culture and tradition of caring for our natural environment,” Edwards said.

The new chargers at the market will fill a gap in the Island’s EV charging network.

Work on installing the chargers is expected to get underway at the market next month.

Electric vehicles are a major focus for the province moving forward.

The zero-emission vehicles act outlines at least 10 per cent of all new light vehicle sales must be electric by 2025 with the goal of 100 per cent by 2040.

In 2020, 9.4 per cent of new vehicle sales in the category were electric. Over 60,000 electric vehicles are currently registered on B.C. roads.

To make the technology more attractive to consumers, an increasing network of chargers is available.

In February, four stations at Nanaimo airport came online, providing free charges through until the start of July.
