UPDATE 1:00 p.m. July 4 — The wildfire approximately three kilometres east of Highway 5 on Strawberry Hill is estimated at five hectares and is classified as out of control.

B.C. Wildfire Service said it has three personnel with a helicopter bucketing water on site. Airtankers have completed their action.

UPDATE — Overnight (July 3), crews from Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) and B.C. Wildfire Service continued working towards extinguishing the Kamloops East Interface fire.

Three of the firefighting vehicles also attended a flare up on the Strawberry Hill fire. KFR will continue to monitor both fires throughout the day.

KFR is also monitoring the fires in proximity to Kamloops and is ready to respond should the need arise. The Emergency Operations team will be closely watching the weather forecast and will gauge its response as necessary.

The Structure Protection Units have been released back to the B.C. government, but may be recalled if needed.

“I’m extremely proud of everybody,” Fire Chief Steve Robinson said. “The dedication and work of all staff has been exemplary.”

The City of Kamloops Emergency Operations Centre will continue to support the fire suppression crews and Emergency Support Services operations.

Normal irrigation may resume within regular water restrictions.
