KAMLOOPS — With school out for the summer, the Kamloops RCMP Crime Prevention Unit hopes to spread safety tips to parents and children across the city.

As COVID-19 restrictions loosen as well, RCMP expects to see more people out in the community.

Bike safety tips include:

  • Wearing a properly fitted helmet and bright or reflective clothing.
  • Never riding barefoot.
  • Always walking your bike through a crosswalk.
  • Stopping at all stop signs and obeying streetlights just as cars do.
  • Using bike lanes or designated bike routes whenever possible.
  • Using a bell or horn to let pedestrians know you are there.
  • Making eye contact with drivers; assume drivers don’t see you.
  • Looking for cars in driveways, laneways, and at intersections
  • Being prepared to stop.
  • Expecting pedestrians to exit from stores.

Pedestrians are encouraged to:

  • Walk on the inside edge of the sidewalk so they are further away from traffic.
  • Walk facing traffic so they can see oncoming vehicles if there’s no sidewalk.
  • Cross only at intersections or marked crosswalks, never jay walk.
  • Dress to be seen, especially at night and on dark and overcast days.
  • Make sure they can hear and see oncoming cars; remove headphones and hood when crossing the street.
  • Make eye contact with drivers; keep their head up and look where they’re walking.
  • Always look for signs that a vehicle is about to move, such as rear lights, exhaust smoke, the sound of a motor, and wheels turning.

And drivers should:

  • Have their lights on to increase visibility, regardless of the time of day.
  • Scan right and left for pedestrians before continuing through an intersection.
  • Be cautious of pedestrians who may be distracted or unaware of their surroundings, such as being on their phone, having their headphones in, and having an umbrella or hood block their vision.
  • Obey the speed limit; not to avoid tickets but to avoid tragedy.
