High Streamflow Advisory for North Thompson River amid extreme heat

Jun 29, 2021 | 11:31 AM

VICTORIA — The River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for the North Thompson River and higher elevation tributaries, including Clearwater River, Blue River and others.

A High Streamflow Advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Monday’s (June 28) advisory comes after hot temperatures amidst B.C.’s heatwave triggered significant amount of snowmelt at the higher elevations of the North Thompson.

Rivers and creeks are rapidly rising and are nearing two‐year return period flows.

Extremely high temperatures will increase the snowmelt and glacier melt which will cause river levels to continue to rise in the coming days.

The public is advised to stay clear of the fast‐flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high‐streamflow period.

The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor the conditions and will provide updates as conditions warrant.
