NANAIMO — New COVID-19 cases within Island Health over the weekend were only found in the central Island area.

All three confirmed on Monday, June 28 were in the central Island area. At the same time, the number of active cases in the central Island area dropped by three to 13. There are currently 19 active cases, a drop of 10 from the Friday before.

Central Island has more than half of the currently active cases.

B.C. as a whole saw a light weekend of COVID-19 cases with only 145. This is a sizable drop from the previous weekend.

There are currently 930 active cases. This is the first time active cases have dipped beneath 1,000 since September, 2020 as the second wave was ramping up.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said she’s encouraged by downward trends across the province.

“Surrey still remains the top of our case count, however…not only have cases decreased but they used to see 300 new cases per week and we’re now down to 70 new cases per week. We can see this trend across the board, reflecting the protection we’re getting from immunization.”

Nearly 77 per cent of eligible B.C. residents over the age of 12 have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
