KAMLOOPS — This may be the only time in history that a cooling trend will represent a chance to set new high temperature records.

Environment Canada says a cooling trend is en route to the B.C. Interior for late in the week, on the heels of mid-40s forecast highs early in the week.

“The ridge of high pressure is remaining in place for the next two to three days here for the southern Interior,” meteorologist Lisa Erven told CFJC Today. “We’ve got daytime highs forecast to reach 44 for today and 45 for tomorrow, and then even 43 for Wednesday.”

“The good news is, as we get into the late part of this week, we do have a cooling trend on the way,” continued Erven. “Daytime highs are going to drop to only the high-30s. I say the cooling trend is on the way, but it’s a relative cooling trend — we’re dropping from the extreme temperatures in the mid- to high-40s down to the mid- to high-30s.”

If Kamloops hits Thursday’s forecast high of 38 degrees Celsius — during the cooling trend — it would still break the all-time Canada Day high of 37.5, set in 1987.

“The same precautions that we need to be taking today, tomorrow and Wednesday are going to remain in place throughout the rest of this week,” said Erven. “It’s really important to stay hydrated, do what you can to keep your body as cool as possible, seek shade during the hottest parts of the day if you do happen to be working or recreating outside.”

Saturday (June 26) set a new daily record of 40.7 degrees, exceeding the old record of 38.4, set in 2006. On Sunday, Kamloops hit 44 degrees, obliterating the former record of 38.2 set in 2015.
