B.C. averages 48 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend; five deaths include young person from Interior

KAMLOOPS — COVID-19 transmission continued on the downtrend in B.C. on the weekend.

In a briefing Monday (June 28), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 145 new cases of the virus over the past three days — 57 on Saturday, 50 on Sunday and 38 on Monday. That averages out to about 48 cases per day.

There were a total of 26 new cases over the past three days in Interior Health.

Overall, B.C. has found 147,549 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, spread out as follows:

  • 35,475 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 48)
  • 85,781 — Fraser Health (up by 68)
  • 5,162 — Island Health (up by 1)
  • 13,138 — Interior Health (up by 26)
  • 7,803 — Northern Health (unchanged)
  • 204 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry reported 930 active cases of the virus Monday, a decrease of 166 from Friday. There are 107 people in hospital and 37 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 195 active cases, a decrease of 61 from Friday. There are seven people in hospital and six in critical care.

Five more people have died of the virus, including a person in their 20s. That bring the B.C. death toll to 1,754. Two of the deaths took place in Interior Health, raising the regional death toll to 157.

A total of 144,848 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 98 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry noted 78.1 per cent of all adults have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and the proportion is 76.8 per cent for British Columbians aged 12 or older. She said health officials delivered more than 427,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine last week, a new record for the province.
