Summer reading clubs return at Thompson Nicola Regional Libraries

KAMLOOPS — Summer has arrived, and summer reading clubs are ready to begin at the Thompson Nicola Regional Library. The free programs are designed to promote reading as a fun activity — and ultimately a life skill.

This year, the library is offering online and in-person sign-ups for all of the summer reading programs available. The B.C.-wide program, with a theme of Crack the Case, challenges children aged six through 12 to read every day for seven weeks.

Summer reading program coordinator Meg Ross says participants will get a reading log with a page of sticker clues to fill out over the summer.

“When they complete all seven weeks they can bring it back into the library or they can send us a picture, and they can pick up a medal and certificate, and then they also get an entry into our grand prize draw,” says Ross.

For younger children, teens, or adults, the other program offered through the library encourages participants to read for 25 books, 25 days, or 25 hours — whichever works for their reading level.

“We usually see about 1,000 children across the system taking part,” she notes. “Last year those numbers were a little bit lower just with everything and switching to things being online. But we’ve been so pleased this year to see numbers start climbing back up. We’ve still got a week left in registration and we’ve got over 600 kids registered so far. So really happy to see the program coming back.”

Programs kick off on June 28, however there is no deadline to join. Registration can be done online at tnrl.ca, or in person at any of the Thompson Nicola Regional Library locations.
