Active COVID cases in Island Health fall swiftly over weekend

NANAIMO — The number of active COVID-19 cases in Island Health fell sharply after a relatively high week of new cases.

Island Health on Monday, June 21 confirmed there are 29 active cases, down from 56 the Friday before.

Last week saw a higher than average number of new cases with roughly 40.

Four new cases were discovered over the weekend in Island Health, mostly in the central Vancouver Island area.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health. The data discrepancy has increased in recent weeks.

Across B.C. less than 100 new cases were found each day over the weekend for a total of 229. The number of active cases dropped to slightly over 1,200.

There were three new fatalities.
