Hot Nite in the City plans return to downtown Kamloops for 26th annual event

KAMLOOPS — With the direction the province is headed with COVID-19 cases and restriction easements, the 26th annual Hot Nite in the City event will return to downtown Kamloops in August.

The pandemic forced the cancellation of last year’s event, which normally sees more than 500 hot rods, vintage cars and motorcycles line the streets of the city centre.

Organizer Ron Popove says this year Hot Nite won’t have crowds from the Rotary Ribfest, or the usual 35,000 people walking through to check out the vehicles, but they’re hoping for a good turn out.

Normally a whole year of planning goes into an event of this size. With this year’s planning condensed into several weeks, Popove will have his work cut out for him.

“I’ve been involved since day one. It is a worthwhile cause, we keep a lot of people happy, and a lot of car people happy.”

Throughout the pandemic, Popove notes people involved in the Kamloops car scene have kept busy with a series of rolling tours. They’ve been regularly driving past long term care and assisted living facilities to entertain seniors and other residents.

“Last night we did the North Shore and we did 11 seniors homes,” says Popove. “We cruised for an hour and a half and finished off at A & W. We had over 120 local cars out there cruising and we had a lot of happy seniors out there.”

The Show and Shine Car Show plans to return the weekend of August 6 and 7, dependent on provincial COVID-19 safety guidelines.
