Police watchdog to probe 2019 Falkland arrest after man comes forward claiming serious injury

FALKLAND, B.C. — B.C.’s police watchdog is looking into an incident from 2019 in Falkland.

According to a news release from the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO), the incident happened on December 3, 2019.

At about 9:40 a.m. in the 5600-block of Highway 97 in Falkland, RCMP officers came across a vehicle connected to two people with outstanding arrest warrants.

Police had unsuccessfully tried to pull the vehicle over the day before so, for this attempt, they called in the Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Police Dog Service to help out.

The female passenger was arrested without incident, but the IIO says “an interaction occurred” with the male driver during the arrest, and the police dog had to help take him into custody. The man sustained what was initially believed to be a minor injury in the interaction.

Fifteen months later, on March 12, 2021, RCMP were told “the man may have sustained a serious injury” in the arrest. The IIO, who investigate whenever someone in B.C. is killed or sustains a serious injury in an interaction with police, was notified on April 26.
