Interior flood threat waning: B.C. River Forecast Centre

VICTORIA — The B.C. River Forecast Centre (RFC) says the flood risk from snowmelt has passed in B.C., meaning it would now take major rainfall events to induce flooding.

In it’s June 1 snow survey, the RFC finds near normal snowpack overall in B.C. While northern areas of the province still have above-normal reading, the south has seen significant melt over the past month.

As examples, the South Thompson basin is at 69 per cent of normal for this time of year, with the North Thompson at 98 per cent of normal.

In its outlook, the RFC notes there are several waterways that are still vulnerable to heavy rainfall, but snowmelt alone is no longer a factor in river conditions.
