Adams Lake Indian Band honouring residential school suvivors with walk from Kamloops to Chase

KAMLOOPS — Over the course of three days, Adams Lake Indian Band members will walk from Kamloops to Chase to honour the Kamloops Indian Residential School survivors and the children who never made it home.
“Walking Our Spirits Home” will begin with a gathering at Red Bridge, Pioneer Park in Kamloops on June 11 at 9:00 a.m., and conclude with a barbecue salmon feast at the Adams Lake Indian Band gym parking lot on June 13 at noon.
Walkers can do five-kilometre increments, with a maximum group of 10 walkers per stretch to follow the Band’s COVID-19 safety plan. Due to a high volume of walkers expect, the Band asks anyone who would like to participate to register online so they can plan accordingly. Transportation will be available to and from the Pow Wow Grounds.
Kamloops Indian Residential School operated from 1890 to 1969, with peak enrolment of 500 in the 1950s. The federal government took over administration of the school from 1969 to 1978, using the building as a residence for students attending other Kamloops schools.
