Heavy construction near the Columbia corridor planned throughout the summer

KAMLOOPS — The Sahali area will be getting an extensive facelift throughout the summer with upgrades coming to the Columbia Street West corridor.

Construction for the Columbia Corridor Project starts June 14 and is expected to take approximately two months to complete.

The Columbia Corridor Project consists of:

• Pavement milling and repaving at Columbia Street West from McGill Road to Notre Dame Drive (highway boundary), Summit Drive between McGill Road and Columbia Street West, and Notre Dame Drive between Columbia Street West and Summit Drive
• Modifying right-turn channels at the intersection of Notre Dame Drive and Summit Drive, and various median and boulevard modifications
• Water main upgrades along Notre Dame Drive from Columbia Street West to Summit Drive
• Traffic signal upgrades to the intersection of Columbia Street West and Notre Dame Drive

Work will start on Notre Dame Drive, which will result in a closure of the road to westbound traffic. A detour is provided to westbound traffic via Summit Drive. The estimated time of completion is approximately three weeks.

The City of Kamloops stated a minimum of two travel lanes – one in each direction – will be maintained through the work zone, or a detour route will be provided.

Motorists are told to expect congestion and delays, and they should plan accordingly. Alternate routes, or modes of transportation such as transit, cycling or walking is encouraged.

The City said heavily impactful portions of the project will be completed at night. In the long run, the City said the Columbia Corridor Project will reduce the impact on the public and businesses and save money.
