B.C. averages 161 new cases of COVID-19 over three days; immunization up to 72 per cent of those eligible

VANCOUVER — B.C. averaged 161 new cases of COVID-19 per day over the weekend, according to provincial health officials.

Deputy Provincial Health Officer Dr. Reka Gustafson included the figures in a Monday (June 7) update.

There were 218 new cases on Saturday, 131 on Sunday and 133 on Monday, for a total of 482 new cases.

In total, there were 101 new cases within Interior Health.

Overall, B.C. has found 145,530 COVID-19 infections since the pandemic began, spread out as follows:

  • 35,125 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 70)
  • 84,790 — Fraser Health (up by 285)
  • 5,076 — Island Health (up by 9)
  • 12,619 — Interior Health (up by 101)
  • 7,719 — Northern Health (up by 15)
  • 200 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Gustafson reported 2,102 active cases of COVID-19 Monday, a decrease of 351 from Friday. There are 199 patients in hospital and 63 in intensive care, with 38 requiring ventilators.

Within Interior Health, there are 362 active cases, a drop of 17 from Friday. There are 12 people in hospital and nine in intensive care.

Twelve more people have died of the virus, for a total of 1,722 since the pandemic began. The Interior Health death toll remains at 152.

A total of 141,706 people are considered fully recovered from COVID-19, or 97 per cent of all recorded cases.

Gustafson noted B.C. has administered 3,635,795 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, including 314,246 second doses. The proportion of those who have received their first dose of vaccine is now 74 per cent of adults and 72 per cent of all those eligible aged 12 and older.
