MERRITT, B.C. — To improve safety for people travelling on the Coquihalla (Highway 5) south of Merritt, centre median barriers will be installed and the highway shoulder widened.

A $2.2-million contract has been awarded to Jakes Construction Ltd. for the Highway 5 Mine Creek Curves project, about 55 kilometres south of Merritt. This project covers a section of the Coquihalla that has been the site of some cross-over crashes.

Crews will install four kilometres of centre median barrier, which will improve highway safety for people who live and work in this region by reducing the potential for some accidents.

These safety enhancements will make this section of the Coquihalla safer and more reliable for everyone who travels the highway, including commercial truck drivers carrying goods.
