NANAIMO — Island Health hit a low not seen since October, 2020 in the fight against COVID-19.

Just one new case of the virus was confirmed by Island Health on Tuesday, June 1. The last time Island Health saw one or less cases was on Oct. 30, right before large increases in the second wave.

The one case was in the north Vancouver Island area, where seven are currently active.

Four people in the central Vancouver Island area and one to the south recovered.

Fifty nine cases of the virus in the Island Health region are considered active.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Across B.C., just 184 new cases were found, down from the roughly 700 new per day at the beginning of May.

Nearly all of the new cases were in the Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health authorities.

The number of active cases fell by roughly 150 to 2,800. There are 254 people in hospital, with 80 of those receiving intensive care.

No new fatalities were recorded.

As of Tuesday, more than 70 per cent of B.C. adults have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

More than 3.3 million first doses have been administered.
