Island Health drops to pre-2021 levels of new COVID-19 cases

May 26, 2021 | 4:31 PM

NANAIMO — The early 2021 swell of COVID-19 within Island Health, which never really abated, is now behind the health authority.

Island Health confirmed 10 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, May 26, some of the lowest numbers seen consistently since the days shortly before Christmas.

Slightly less than 10 new cases a day were found over the May long weekend and the following Tuesday.

Half of the new cases were found in the central Island region, where there are currently 39 active cases. Southern Vancouver Island has 28 active cases with only two new, while northern Island Health saw three new cases and 29 considered active.

There hasn’t been this few active COVID-19 cases in Island Health since just before the New Year’s long weekend.

The central Vancouver Island area has consistently led Island Health in total COVID-19 cases, especially during the third wave of the pandemic.

Across B.C., 250 new cases were found. Active cases continued to fall to slightly less than 3,600, the lowest since early November, 2020.

The number of people in hospital is once again below 300 at 296, with 97 of those individuals receiving intensive care.

On Wednesday, B.C. surpassed giving three million vaccine doses.
