Another 12 British Columbians die from COVID-19 virus as province prepares to announce future plan

VICTORIA – There have been 12 COVID-19 related deaths in British Columbia over the Victoria Day long weekend. However there is a sense of optimism on the horizon as the provincial government prepares to release its Restart Plan Tuesday.

B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry released the lastest provincial COVID-19 statistics Monday afternoon in a news release.

Over the three days of the weekend, there were 974 new cases identified. From May 21 to May 22, B.C. recorded 356 new cases. From May 22 to May 23, there were 325 new cases and in the last 24 hours, another 293 new cases. Since the pandemic began, there have been 142,347 cases in British Columbia.

Since the last report Friday, there have been 117 new cases in the Interior Health region, 157 new cases in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 630 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 25 in the Island Health region, 44 in the Northern Health region and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.

There are 3,953 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. A further 136,603 people who tested positive have recovered. Of the active cases, 292 people are hospitalized, 96 of whom are in intensive care. The remaining people with COVID-19 are recovering at home in self-isolation.

The province says 2,885,488 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to adults 18 and over in B.C., 147,144 of which are second doses.

The so-called ‘circuit-breaker restrictions’ are set to expire tonight (May 24) in British Columbia. Tuesday Premier John Horgan has scheduled a news conference at 1:00 p.m. He is expected to announce a restart plan for the province. He’ll be joined by Adrian Dix, Dr. Bonnie Henry and Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation Ravi Kahlon.
