CFJC’s News Director celebrates RTDNA Lifetime Achievement Award

KAMLOOPS — For nearly 40 years, Dave Barry has worked in broadcast news. His career began in Lloydminster in the ’80s before he moved on to CKPG in Prince George.

In PG, Dave reported, anchored sports and eventually the news, before spending a decade as News Director.

In 2018, he came to Kamloops to be CFJC’s News Director; on Tuesday (May 18), he was recognized for his work and longevity in the industry.

When he started in the broadcast news business almost forty years ago, Dave Barry had no expectations of winning a lifetime achievement award.

“It just kind of happens over time,” Barry says. “When it does happen, it’s pretty humbling.”

On Tuesday, he was honoured with the RTDNA Lifetime Achievement Award. He was nominated by his former CKPG co-worker Catherine Hansen.

“Dave and I shared a common vision for news,” Hansen remembers. “He was a really inspiring boss and mentor.”

Dave had two stints at CKPG news, including over a decade as the News Director. In 2018, he made the move to Kamloops, after long-time CFJC News Director Doug Collins retired.

“We started to look at who would be able to fill those shoes — and they were a big pair of shoes to fill,” Pattison Media President Rod Schween says. “Our first choice was Dave Barry.”

Hansen, who is now a producer at CBC Prince George, has high praise for Barry as both a mentor and co-worker.

“I don’t think he realizes the effects that he’s had on those who have worked with him,” she says. “He’s truly been a mentor — a calm leader who always did his job with style and grace.”

For Barry, those are the folks he’s thinking of after recognition of this magnitude.

“When you reach a milestone like this, you certainly look back and are very thankful to everyone you’ve worked with.”
