Sad memories one year after Snowbird crash

KAMLOOPS — It was one year ago today when Kamloops was rocked by the crash of a Snowbirds plane into a Brocklehurst neighbourhood.. It happened as the demonstration team was heading out of town.

The Tutor jet, piloted by Captain Richard MacDougall, was attempting to turn back to Kamloops Airport after hitting a bird as it was taking off. But there wasn’t enough power, and the plane crashed, causing MacDougall to suffer serious injuries, and killing the passenger, Captain Jennifer Casey, the team’s publicity director.

There are indications Casey’s chute never fully deployed, and the ejection system didn’t operate properly because of its steep dive when the two pilots ejected.

The planes were in Kamloops for some time while all the planes were checked and eventually they were transported home. The Snowbirds recently did a flyby on their way to Comox in memory of Casey and the response from the City and its residents to the crash.
