B.C. averages 453 new COVID-19 cases over the past three days; 126 weekend cases in Interior Health

VICTORIA — While key COVID-19 case indicators declined over the weekend, the virus continued to take a deadly toll on British Columbia.

In a news conference Monday (May 17), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 1,360 new cases of COVID-19 over the past three days — 443 on Saturday, 493 on Sunday and 424 on Monday. That averages out to 453 cases per day.

There were 126 new cases found in Interior Health over the weekend.

Overall, B.C. has found 139,664 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, spread through B.C. as follows:

  • 34,078 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 291)
  • 81,332 — Fraser Health (up by 861)
  • 4,947 — Island Health (up by 36)
  • 11,741 — Interior Health (up by 126)
  • 7,463 — Northern Health (up by 47)
  • 195 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry reported an active COVID-19 case load of 5,021, which has decreased by 527 from Friday. There are 350 people in hospital and 132 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 451 active cases, a decrease of 16 from Friday. There are 22 people in hospital and 13 in intensive care.

Fourteen more people have died of the virus, increasing B.C.’s death toll to 1,648. None of the deaths occurred in Interior Health, leaving the regional death toll at 145.

A total of 132,841 are considered fully recovered, or 95 per cent of all recorded cases.

B.C. has administered 2,528,398 doses of COVID vaccine, or about 55 per cent of all British Columbians 18 and over.
