KAMLOOPS — RCMP say officers took a commercial vehicle off the road in Kamloops Wednesday because it too closely resembled a police vehicle.

In a news release, RCMP say a man arrived at the downtown detachment “to discuss a Notice of Order requiring him to make changes and repairs” to the vehicle.

An inspection with a Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) officer found police-style equipment, including lighting and antennas. The man said he need the equipment for his business, however the enforcement officers deemed them deficiencies.

The vehicle was removed from the roadway and police seized its license plates.

“It’s concerning to police and to the community whenever someone has outfitted a vehicle in a way that can be believed to be a police vehicle,” said Insp. Jeff Pelley, Kamloops RCMP operations officer, who went on to say there have been other reports in the province of people using vehicles to impersonate police officers.

Anyone found using clothing or equipment to impersonate a law enforcement officer could be charged and, if convicted, serve up to five years in prison.
