B.C. records 20 virus-related deaths over the weekend, 1,759 new cases

VICTORIA — It has been another deadly weekend as the COVID-19 pandemic marches on. B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry is reporting 1,759 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend, including 20 deaths.

There have now been 1,622 virus related fatalities in B.C since the pandemic began with the vast majority being seniors.

In today’s update (May 10), Dr. Bonnie Henry says between Friday (May 7) and Saturday (May 8) there were 596 new cases of COVID-19. There were 605 new cases between Saturday (May 8) and Sunday (May 9). And 558 new cases between Sunday (May 9) and Monday (May 10).

That increases B.C.’s overall total to 136,100 cases since the pandemic began, distributed as follows:

• 33,155 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 325)
• 79,124 — Fraser Health (up by 1,201)
• 4,854 — Island Health (up by 50)
• 11,418 — Interior Health (up by 131)
• 7,355 — Northern Health (up by 26)
• 193 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

The active case count has reached 6,140 as of Monday, a decrease of 617 from Friday (May 7).

Hospitalizations in B.C have gone down to 415, but the number of patients in critical care has risen to 150.

To date, 128,139 people have recovered from COVID-19 in British Columbia, and no new healthcare outbreaks were reported today.

Dr. Henry says 2,159,103 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been delivered so far, including 106,058 of which are second doses.

She says the goal is to get second doses as soon as possible, and encourages everyone to register on the BC Get Vaccinated website. This includes people who received their first dose before the online system launched on April 6, and those who received their first dose at a pharmacy.

Dr. Henry notes this evening (May 10), anyone who is 40 years of age and older can book appointments through provincial clinics. Text and email alerts will be going to everyone who is registered when they become eligible to book.
