KAMLOOPS — A fire along the South Thompson River in Valleyview was put out Sunday (May 9) afternoon.

Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) told CFJC Today they sent four vehicles to the riverbank near Kelly Douglas Road after a large amount of debris at a homeless encampment caught fire.

The fire was put out in 20 to 30 minutes and no injuries were reported. While there was smoke that could be toxic earlier on, KFR said there’s no longer a risk to the public.

Valleyview residents previously expressed their concern of the street-affected population camps.
