KAMLOOPS — The investigation into potential criminal irregularities in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s (TNRD) financial books has been taken over by a federal unit of the RCMP.

In March, the TNRD launched an independent financial review of its books. At the same time, it forwarded “information concerning potential financial irregularities” to the Mounties.

In a news release issued Thursday (May 6), the Kamloops RCMP detachment says the investigation has been assigned to the Federal Serious and Organized Crime (FSOC) Financial Integrity — Sensitive Investigations Unit.

“Following an assessment of the information presented, the Kamloops RCMP was able to establish a better understanding of the scope of that investigation and conduct internal consultations surrounding the most appropriate and timely police response in terms of resourcing and expertise,” said Staff Sgt. Simon Pillay of the Kamloops RCMP Serious Crimes Unit in the release.

Pillay says the Kamloops detachment will assist the federal unit as needed.
