B.C. finds 841 more cases of COVID-19; hospital and ICU counts push higher into record territory

VICTORIA — B.C.’s hospitalizations and intensive care admissions from COVID-19 have pushed further into record territory, even as the daily case counts drop from earlier heights.

The province is reporting 841 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, including 74 within Interior Health.

The overall total for B.C. since the pandemic began is now 127,889 cases, spread through the province thusly:

  • 31,520 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 171)
  • 73,623 — Fraser Health (up by 541)
  • 4,603 — Island Health (up by 35)
  • 10,834 — Interior Health (up by 74)
  • 7,116 — Northern Health (up by 20)
  • 193 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are 8,009 active cases of the virus in B.C. Wednesday, down by 80 from Tuesday. There are now 515 people in hospital, including 171 in intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 659 active cases, a decrease of eight from Tuesday. There are 36 people in hospital, with 20 in critical care.

Five more people have died of COVID-19, pushing the B.C. death toll to 1,576. One of those deaths took place in Interior Health, raising the regional death toll to 130.

A total of 11,657 people are under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 exposure.

There are now 118,057 people considered fully recovered, or 92 per cent of all recorded cases.

The province says it has now administered 1,705,409 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
