TNRD to write a letter of support to ban commercial truck traffic from Highway 5A
MERRITT, B.C. — After months of debate and presentations from various stakeholders in the region, the Thompson Nicola Regional District has voted in favour of drafting a letter of support of a ban on non-local commercial truck traffic on Highway 5A between Kamloops and Merritt.
Merritt Mayor Linda Brown serves as a Director on the TNRD Board and voted against the motion.
“I won’t be voting for this and for the reason that the City (of Merritt) has gone to the Ministry talking about a mandatory entry-level training program for drivers. Not all drivers fit the bill of driving too fast, driving dangerously,” said Brown. “It isn’t get all truckers off the road, it’s do something with the truckers who are unsafe on the road. Reduce the speed, have more police coverage.”
“If you’re going to do something look at the bad drivers,” added Brown.
