Rookie Fraser Minten scores first WHL goal, Blazers beat Royals 3-2

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers took back first place in the B.C. Western Hockey League (WHL) Hub standings at the Sandman Centre Friday (April 23) evening.

Despite playing against the one-win, last place Victoria Royals, the Blazers struggled to put the puck past goaltender Adam Evanoff for 40 minutes.

Captain Connor Zary got into penalty trouble in the second period, with an embellishment call early on, followed by roughing, unsportsmanlike conduct, and a 10-minute misconduct. Royals center Brayden Schurrman would score on the power play to give Victoria a 1-0 lead.

However, Matthew Seminoff scored 36 seconds into the third to immediately put the Blazers back in the game 1-1.

Zary took all his penalty frustrations in the second and scored his fifth of the season to give Kamloops the lead halfway through the third.

Sixteen-year-old rookie Fraser Minten scored the game winning goal on the power play as the Blazers won their tenth game 3-2.

Kamloops improved their B.C. WHL Hub record to 10-2-0, good for first in the standings with 20 points in 12 games. They’ll take on the team that’s two points behind them – the Vancouver Giants – Sunday (April 25) at 6 p.m. in Kamloops.
