COVID-19 pandemic has staggering impact on airport passenger numbers

KAMLOOPS – It’s not a big surprise, but the numbers are eye-opening. The Kamloops Airport says it has seen it’s passenger numbers fall by nearly 91 per cent when comparing the first three months of the year to the same period in 2020.

The fall is the result of massive cuts in commercial flights in and out of the airport during the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The airport expects numbers to remain low as B.C. continues with non-essential travel restrictions and quarantine measures.

However it remains hopeful federal funding for the airline industry and continued vaccination success will lead to a growth in domestic leisure travel over the summer.

In the meantime, the airport says in a release, that it remains fully functional as a base for medivac, wildfire, cargo and charter flight activity.
