B.C. records 1,006 new cases of COVID-19, hospitalizations top 500

KAMLOOPS — B.C.’s COVID-19 hospitalizations have topped the 500 mark for the first time, leading the province to put a temporary pause on scheduled surgeries in the Lower Mainland.

In a news conference Thursday (Apr. 22), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 1,006 new cases of COVID-19, including 83 within Interior Health. Henry noted the figures are preliminary and will be confirmed later in the day.

That has swelled the overall COVID-19 case count in B.C. to 122,757 since the pandemic began, distributed as follows:

  • 30,547 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 241)
  • 70,290 — Fraser Health (up by 600)
  • 4,432 — Island Health (up by 37)
  • 10,365 — Interior Health (up by 83)
  • 6,937 — Northern Health (up by 42)
  • 184 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 3)

There are 8,733 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Thursday, down 173 from Wednesday. Henry reported 502 people in hospital — a new record for B.C. — with 161 patients in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 796 active cases of the virus, down 44 from Wednesday. There are 32 people in hospital and 13 in critical care.

Four more people have died of COVID-19, raising the overall B.C. death toll to 1,550. Health Minister Adrian Dix says two of those deaths took place in Interior Health, raising the regional death toll to 124.

Henry reported 1,500,430 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to British Columbians so far.
