B.C. adds 862 COVID-19 cases Wednesday; hospitalizations approach 500

VICTORIA — B.C.’s COVID-19 pandemic added another 862 cases Wednesday (Apr. 21), while hospitalization and intensive care totals push further into record territory.

The new totals are included in a report prepared by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

There were 54 new cases found in Interior Health.

Overall, there have been 121,751 cases of COVID-19 found in B.C. since the pandemic began, spread out as follows:

  • 30,306 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 200)
  • 69,690 — Fraser Health (up by 557)
  • 4,395 — Island Health (up by 25)
  • 10,282 — Interior Health (up by 54)
  • 6,895 — Northern Health (up by 26)
  • 181 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are now 8,906 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C., a decrease of 239 from Tuesday. There are 483 people now in hospital with the virus, including 164 in intensive care. Both totals are new records for B.C.

Within Interior Health, there are 840 active cases of the virus, a decrease of 44 from Tuesday. Thirty-two people are in hospital, with 11 in critical care.

Seven more people have died of COVID-19, pushing B.C.’s death toll to 1,546. The Interior Health death toll remains at 122.

There are 13,135 people under active public health monitoring due to direct contact with COVID-19 cases.

Another 111,039 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 91 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry reports 1,456,946 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to British Columbians to date.
