B.C. finds 2,960 new COVID-19 cases over three days; eight more deaths including two-year-old child

VICTORIA — After announcing an extension of circuit-breaker restrictions and previewing new travel measures, the province unveiled its snapshot of the COVID-19 situation over the weekend.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry noted 2,960 new cases of the virus were recorded over the past three days – 1,027 on Saturday (Apr. 170, 933 on Sunday and 1,000 on Monday.

There were 211 new cases found within Interior Health.

The new cases raise the overall provincial total to 120,040 since the pandemic began, spread out as follows:

  • 29,859 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 696)
  • 68,659 — Fraser Health (up by 1,845)
  • 4,341 — Island Health (up by 108)
  • 10,061 — Interior Health (up by 211)
  • 6,838 — Northern Health (up by 100)
  • 180 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry says the active COVID-19 case load is at 9,353 Monday (Apr. 19), down by 728 from Friday. There are 441 people in hospital with the virus in B.C., with 138 in critical or intensive care. Both totals are records for B.C.

Within Interior Health, there are 875 active cases, a decrease of 29 from Friday. There are 27 people in hospital, including 12 in critical care.

Eight more people have died of the virus in B.C. over the past three days, bringing the provincial death toll to 1,538. One of the weekend’s deaths took place in Interior Health, raising the regional death toll to 122.

Among the deaths is a child from the Fraser Health Authority under the age of two. The child had pre-existing, complicating health factors, but Henry says they still died of COVID-19.

“This, tragically, is the youngest person within our province who has died from COVID-19, and it reminds us of the vicious nature of this virus,” said Henry.

A total of 14,711 people are under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 contact.

Another 108,919 people are considered fully recovered, or 91 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry noted 1,380,160 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered.
