KAMLOOPS — With Saturday looking sunny, expect the first outdoor edition of the Kamloops Regional Farmer’s Market of 2021 to be busy.

“I’m so pumped,” Market Manager Greg Unger tells CFJC Today. “I’ve been looking forward to the outdoor market all winter long.”

While the growing season is just getting underway for many local farmers, folks can expect a diverse selection of vendors at the first outdoor market of the year.

“A lot of the crafters haven’t had many places to go over winter,” Unger says. “So we’re going to be having a lot of craft vendors. There’s going to be pottery, vendors selling homemade face masks and soap. All kinds of those lovely things. We’re going to have a lot of prepared food. Everybody loves the coffee and donuts people, they’re going to be here, again. We’re going to have bakers. There’s going to be a winery. There might even be a new distillery in town that will have a stall.”

With a year of COVID-19 experience under their belts, organizers are confident they’ll be able to run the market safely. They’ve instituted some additional safety protocols to help ensure that everyone who attends can be confident, too.

“We’re asking everyone — vendors, staff, volunteers, the public — please, wear a mask at the market,” Unger says. “The market can get quite busy and it seems safer for everyone that we have masks.”

According to Interior Health’s top doctor, market-goers should be safe, as long as everyone follows the safety guidelines.

“We’re always concerned when people start congregating together,” Dr. Albert de Villiers says. “The ‘but’ is if people actually follow the plans — and all these places are supposed to submit a plan — if they actually follow the plan and stick to the plan, I’m confident we’ll be safe.”

With a maximum of 100 shoppers in the market at once, organizers ask that you save your socializing for after you’ve made make your purchases.

“Because it’s a nice day, and we’ve all been inside, we’re all going to be excited to see our friends,” Unger says. “We’re just asking that when you’re at the market, please just shop. When you want to hang out with your friends, consider going to Riverside Park or some other green space and hanging out there.”
