B.C. sees 1,205 new cases of COVID-19, sets records for active case load, hospitalizations

VICTORIA — The third wave of B.C.’s COVID-19 pandemic has hit record-setting heights once again Thursday (Apr. 15).

In a briefing Thursday afternoon, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 1,205 new cases of the virus, with 69 of those in Interior Health.

That raises the total of COVID-19 cases found in B.C. to 116,075, spread through the province as follows:

  • 28,904 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 301)
  • 66,278 — Fraser Health (up by 730)
  • 4,184 — Island Health (up by 38)
  • 9,840 — Interior Health (up by 69)
  • 6,687 — Northern Health (up by 66)
  • 180 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 1)

Henry says there are 10,052 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Thursday – a new record. There are 409 people in hospital – also a record – and 125 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 910 active cases of the virus, a decrease of 34 from Wednesday. There are 23 people in hospital and eight in critical care.

Three more people have died of the virus, raising the provincial death toll to 1,524. One of the deaths took place in Interior Health, lifting the regional death toll to 121.

A total of 16,217 people are under public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 contact.

A further 104,331 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 90 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry notes 1,235,863 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to British Columbians, or about 26 per cent of all eligible cases.
