KAMLOOPS — Before even taking the diamond, the Kamloops NorthPaws have struck out — at least for this summer.

The team announced on Wednesday the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the NorthPaws, as well as three other Canadian teams, to cancel the 2021 West Coast League season.

“We”re definitely disappointed to not begin play in 2021,” said the NorthPaws’ ownership group in a statement. “But were still ecstatic about bringing the NorthPaws and the West Coast League to Kamloops. Talking to people throughout the community, that excitement is shared throughout the city. The pandemic has stalled us from starting, but it hasn’t deterred us from starting.”

The teams says it’s releasing previously signed players, who are now free to pursue other opportunities for this summer’s ball season.
