B.C. COVID-19 case count grows by nearly 3,300 over weekend; 299 new cases in Interior

VICTORIA — B.C. has found another 3,289 cases of COVID-19 over the past three days, an average of 1,096 per day.

In a media briefing Monday (Apr. 12), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 1,283 new cases found Saturday, 1,036 cases on Sunday and another 970 on Monday.

Of the newly-found cases, 299 were in Interior Health. Henry noted about 50 per cent of all new cases are now considered variants of concern.

There have now been a total of 112,829 cases of COVID-19 found in B.C., spread out as follows:

  • 28,403 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 740)
  • 64,404 — Fraser Health (up by 1,957)
  • 4,039 — Island Health (up by 167)
  • 9,594 — Interior Health (up by 299)
  • 6,567 — Northern Health (up by 125)
  • 179 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

B.C. is now approaching an active case load of 10,000, sitting at 9,937 on Monday. Henry reported 368 people in hospital, including 121 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are an even 900 active cases, with 24 people in hospital and 13 in critical care.

Eighteen more people have died of COVID-19, raising the provincial death toll to 1,513. Two of those deaths took place in Interior Health, increasing the regional death toll to 120.

Henry says 15,900 people are under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 contact.

A total of 101,216 people are now considered fully recovered from the virus, or 90 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, a total of 1,112,101 vaccine doses have been administered to British Columbians.
