QUESNEL, B.C. – This project has had its fair share of ups and downs, but the new Quesnel Junior School (QJS) will be complete in March 2022.

“We’re at month six of the project, and we’re finishing up our footings and foundations coming out of the ground here, and the big glulam beams are up in the gym,” said Matt Udholm, Site Supervisor for Jen Col Construction.

Project Manager, Scott Thomson said so far QJS is on budget, and hopes to be open following spring break in 2022.

Jen Col Construction along with CHP Architects have worked on the project which broke ground in October 2020.

“This is one of the nicest schools we have worked on,” said Udholm.

The school will cost just over $50 million and will bring a modern learning space including an emphasis on culture space.

The Lhtako Dene Nation has been involved in the process, and will also be part of an attached community space featured in the virtual tour of the school.

The school when completed will have the capacity to hold 550 students set for all Grade 8 and 9 students in Quesnel and School District 28.

This will be the first new school in Quesnel since 1997, back when two elementary schools were built.
