Kamloops Ribfest paused for another summer due to pandemic concerns

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents will once again have to go without Ribfest this summer.

There will be no ribbers in Riverside Park this August, despite an attempt by Daybreak Rotary to come up with a safe way to celebrate the annual event.

As the COVID-19 situation worsens in B.C., spokesperson Bryce Herman says Ribfest has been postponed.

“Our concern with it was not only that we maybe can’t do the event to the level we wanted to, but the other part of it is that you have to start planning and you have to start putting deposits in place with businesses for things that you’re going to need to do the event,” Herman said. “The last thing we wanted to do as a rotary club was give a deposit and then turn around and say, ‘Unfortunately we’ve had to cancel the event and we really hope you can give us back our deposit.'”

Ribfest usually raises more the $100,000 to benefit the community. Planning has begun for next year’s event.

Meantime, Lobsterfest is going ahead, which will serve as a fundraiser for A Way Home Kamloops.

“That was formerly called Crabfest, this year it’s pivoted a little bit, it’s going to be called Lobsterfest,” Herman said. “It’s going to run on the eighth of May and it’s going to be a primary focus to live up to an obligation that we had for A Way Home. We committed to do $75,000 for A Way Home over a three-year commitment.”
