B.C. records 1,889 new COVID-19 cases over past two days; 129 cases found in Interior Health

VICTORIA — B.C.’s COVID-19 transmission is continuing at a very high rate with an increasing rate of variant spread.

In an update prepared by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry Monday (Apr. 5), the province is reporting 1,889 new cases of COVID-19 over the past two days – 999 cases on Sunday and 890 on Monday.

There were 129 new cases found within Interior Health.

The new infections increase B.C.’s overall case count to 104,061 since the pandemic began, spread out as follows:

  • 25,828 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 579)
  • 60,246 — Fraser Health (up by 986)
  • 3,624 — Island Health (up by 100)
  • 8,865 — Interior Health (up by 129)
  • 6,171 — Northern Health (up by 95)
  • 176 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry says there are now 8,490 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C., with 318 people in hospital and 96 in intensive care.

Twenty-three more people have died of the virus since April 1, raising the provincial death toll to 1,486.

In the past four days, there have been 916 newly-confirmed cases of variants of concern, increasing the total to 3,559 variant cases found in B.C. That includes 2,771 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant initially found in the United Kingdom and 737 cases of the P.1 variant initially found in Brazil. There are 588 variant cases still active.

Health officials are actively monitoring 11,989 people due to direct COVID-19 exposure.

A further 94,806 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 91 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry notes the province has administered 893,590 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to date.

Meantime, the province notes the totals reported on Saturday have been updated to 1,074 cases on Friday and 1,077 on Saturday.
