KFR contains second fire in five weeks at Mission Flats Landfill

KAMLOOPS — A rough, early start to Good Friday.

Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) responded to, and controlled, a fire at Mission Flats Landfill at 4 a.m. on Friday (April 2). The landfill is open to the public.

It’s the second fire at Mission Flats Landfill in five weeks after a scrap pile fire on Feb. 27 caused a large plume of black smoke to be visible throughout the city.

The City of Kamloops said KFR will try to investigate the cause of the April 2 fire, but is unable to determine the cause of the Feb. 27 fire due to the disturbance of the burning material during the blaze.

Since the Feb. 27 fire, Operations have reviewed screening processes of items to be deposited at landfill and communicated out disposal requirements.
