Blazers sweep first weekend in hub action, beat Cougars 5-4

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers are 2-and-0 following a come from behind 5-4 win over the Prince George Cougars Saturday night (March 28) in the Kamloops hub.

After Logan Stankoven opened the scoring for the Blazers, the Cougars took a 3-1 lead out of the first on goals by Ethan Browne on the power play, Kyren Gronick on the power play, and Carter MacAdams.

The Blazers evened it up on goals by Caedan Bankier and Josh Pillar before Koehn Ziemmer put the Cougars back in front 4-3 after the second.

At 5:25 of the third while working the penalty kill, Connor Zary split the Cougars defence and sprinted in for a breakaway shorthanded goal.

Then at 10:09 Logan Stankoven with his third goal in two games gave the Blazers their second lead and the game winner.

Dylan Garand and Taylor Gauthier, 2021 Team Canada World Junior Hockey Championship teammates, were the opposing goaltenders. Garand stopped 18 of 22 in the Blazers net, while Gauthier was good on 27 of 32 in the Cougars goal.

Kelowna (1-and-0) will face Vancouver (0-and-1) tonight at the Sandman Centre Kamloops hub.

The Blazers next game is Tuesday (March 30) in the Kelowna hub against the Rockets.
