KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are pledging to open an investigation into an apparent assault by a security guard in downtown Kamloops.

The incident took place last Thursday afternoon (Mar. 18) outside of a City of Kamloops storage facility at 48 Victoria Street West. The facility is used by the city’s homeless population.

CFJC Today has obtained cell phone video of the incident.

The video shows a confrontation between a male security guard and another man wearing a red jacket. There are three other people in proximity of the incident who do not appear to be participants. The identities of the participants are not known.

As the video begins, the security guard appears to tell the man in the red jacket to move along. The man then yells “F*** you!” at the security guard. The security guard responds by pushing the man to the ground before kicking him three times.

As one of the bystanders approaches, the security guard tells the bystander to back off. The woman taking the video shouts, “That is not okay!”

CFJC Today shared the video with Kamloops RCMP, who say they are looking into the apparent assault.

Sgt. Darren Michels says the detachment’s street crimes investigator has been assigned to the file. Michels says an initial report indicated the man in the red jacket may have assaulted the security guard prior to the beginning of the recording, but that has not been confirmed.

In a phonecall with CFJC Today, Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian said he was not previously aware of the incident.

Christian notes some security guards who work near Victoria St. West are contracted by the City of Kamloops and others are contracted by B.C. Housing. He says, if it is found that the security guard in this particular incident is one contracted by the City of Kamloops, the City will open its own investigation.
