Nearly 200 attend ‘camping music protest,’ RCMP investigating

KAMLOOPS — Tk’emlups RCMP said they’re “unfortunately” investigating a rural camping and music event.

Approximately 200 people were found camping in an area 13km up Tranquille Criss Creek Road on Friday (March 19) – where a small stage like structure was set up and loud music was playing – using motorhomes, trailers, and tents.

Police said they attempted to speak to several of the campers to identify the organizer but there was little cooperation.

“One member showed up and there were well over 200 people already in attendance with a mixer stage created,” S/Sgt. Bill Wallace said. “The member stayed on the outskirts and tried to let it be known that he’d like to speak with the organizers. Just to go over the COVID-19 rules with them. What happened shortly thereafter, an announcement came up advising the police were there and there were not very favourable comments suggesting people in attendance to speak to the police.

“These types of events are disheartening and put our frontline officers and those in attendance at great risk to COVID-19. If this turns out to be a super spreader event, these attendees could be potentially bringing COVID-19 home to their parent or grandparent having devastating results.”

RCMP said Canadians have a democratic right to lawful and peaceful protest and police must use discretion when balancing a citizens rights with the current potential health risks associated to large public gatherings.

Wallace said it’s unknown if the Tranquille Criss Creek Road areas has been used for these type of music events in the past. He added that RCMP have received some leads on who the organizer is, although the more information police have the better.

Anyone with information regarding this event or is able to identify the organizer is asked to contact the Tk’emlups RCMP detachment at (250) 314-1800.
