With 737 new cases, B.C. has highest daily COVID-19 case count since January 7

VICTORIA — B.C. has recorded the highest COVID-19 case count in more than two months.

In a prepared statement, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 737 new cases of the virus in the province, the highest daily total since January 7.

The vast majority of those cases were found in the Lower Mainland, with the Interior Health total at 33 for Friday (Mar. 19).

The new cases bring the B.C. total to 90,786 since the pandemic arrived, spread out as follows:

  • 21,278 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 163)
  • 53,066 — Fraser Health (up by 426)
  • 2,867 — Island Health (up by 32)
  • 7,967 — Interior Health (up by 33)
  • 5,443 — Northern Health (up by 82)
  • 165 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 1)

The active case load has risen by 266 Friday to 5,207. There are 292 people in hospital, including 85 in intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 341 active cases of the virus, up by 14. Fifteen people are in hospital with four in critical care.

Two more people have died from COVID-19, lifting B.C.’s death toll to 1,421. The Interior Health death toll remains at 113.

The province has found 68 more cases of variants of concern, swelling the count in B.C. to an even 1,200. One-hundred-forty-nine variant cases remain active.

Health officials are monitoring 9,412 people due to direct contact with COVID-19.

Another 84,078 people have recovered from the virus, or 93 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry says the province has administered 490,022 doses of COVID-119 vaccine.
